Charis Around the World

Tidbits From Ebony
by Elizabeth Carmichael

Sunset in Ebony

Dear Charis Family,

I don't have an especially exciting story to share with you or anything this month, but I wanted to ask for your prayers for two special things.

1. My brother:  He lives in California and was hit by a car while walking across the street to a bus stop a few days ago.  The accident occurred at night and it was a hit and run.  I don't know how someone could do such a thing.  My brother was eating a piece of pizza at the time and the part he was biting went into his lung and caused it to collapse and become infected.  He also endured several cuts to his intestines which had to be repaired in emergency surgery.  Both of his knees are broken and he hit the back of his head pretty hard, although they found no severe damage to his skull or brain.  As I type this, he has currently undergone surgery three times and is still on a ventilator due to the lung infection.  He has no insurance, but has a daughter who I'm sure would like to see him well as soon as possible.  Would you please pray that God would speak to him even during this crazy time?  Would you ask that He know the presence and voice of Jesus in the midst of his pain?  Please also pray for speeding and complete healing for him.

2. Secondly, I wanted to ask you to pray for me this month as I begin a major outside task that I have taken on this month.  An organization that is different from the one I work for approached me to do an external evaluation for them.  The organization is a Christian Anti-Human Trafficking organization here in Ebony.  Ebony is a hub for all kinds of human trafficking related to sex, drugs, labor and kidnapping for political purposes.

For this evaluation, I will spend time in one of the care centers developed by the organization.  They believe not only in providing women and children with rescue and survival, but also with possibilities for rehabilitation back into society.  Nearly all of their clients are Pushpin women and children.  I know at least one of their current clients is pregnant from rape.  Another had to give up her baby to the police in order to cross the border into safety with her other children.  They have been through horrible, horrible circumstances.  What is the Midwives Model of Care for them??  It starts with listening and loving.

I will be evaluating the care center and interviewing every staff member and client.

I really need your prayers:

** For the Lord's wisdom in how to conduct the evaluation, get the best data and write the kinds of recommendations most useful for the organization.

** For strength to extend love and compassion to the clients and staff, and to endure the long work hours it will take.

** For favor and trust of the clients and staff so that I am able to gather their honest information.

** For understanding that will overcome language barriers and allow me to analyze the data I find in an honest and helpful way.

** Finally, please also pray that I would be able to articulate helpful and true findings from this evaluation and write a quality report that will help the organization keep moving forward and that will also satisfy their donors.

Thank you for your faithfulness in praying for me and for Ebony!!

His,
Elizabeth Carmichael

Find out what to watch for and report trafficking.  Don’t try to confront the trafficker or rescue the victim yourself.  This is dangerous work.  If you see something that worries you, contact one of these tip lines:

• The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement:  Call (866) 347-2423 or use the online form.

• Polaris Project: 1-888-373-7888 for help and information and to report possible instances of trafficking.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security lists warning signs and has an awareness training video.  The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services lists these indicators to look for:

• Evidence of being controlled
• Evidence of an inability to move or leave job
• Bruises or other signs of battering
• Fear or depression
• Non-English speaking
• Recently brought to this country from Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America, Canada, Africa or India
• Lack of passport, immigration or identification documentation

'Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them from the ends of the earth,
Among  them the blind and the lame, The woman with child and The one who labors with child,  together,
A great throng shall return there...And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the LORD.'
