Our Charis Family

Tonya Lawrence

Austin, Tonya and Kyle

Greetings, Everyone!

God is so awesome! My name is Tonya Lawrence. As you read on you will learn of a name change that is occurring for me in January…

I am a single Mom to Kyle 12 ½, and Austin 9, both born in the privacy and safety of my home with a midwife. I knew home was the right place for my babies to be born, and it only took a few phone calls to find my midwife. Actually some of you know her, Susan Oshel, your director of midwifery studies. It’s through Susan that I found Charis and am honored to now be a member.

When I decided to look for a midwife, the second I heard Susan’s voice I knew God had a plan for my baby’s birth. A sweet, calm, non-traumatic plan. A natural, God-created plan for birth. Kyle’s birth was beautiful and to this day when I think about it I can still feel his little body sliding into the world. I know for an absolute fact that had he been born in the hospital I would never have had the privilege of this experience. There would have been too much frenzy, too much commotion, and distractions to concentrate on the most natural event in a human’s life. It’s amazing that we can see a glimpse of our children’s personalities in their births! Kyle has been slow to transition and deliberate while Austin has been hurried, and hap-hazardous since birth.

My husband (at the time) and I divorced. It was difficult to find that my marriage was not going to remain intact, but through God’s grace, life has been moving forward.

I have to say it again, God is AWESOME! While the marriage did not survive, the trauma of the divorce pulled to the surface my God-given strengths. I haven’t always been able to be the mother I dreamed of being because I needed to single handedly care for my family. However, God has always blessed my desire to be a Godly mother.

He has allowed me to work in a job that has been flexible and meet our needs. That job was the foundation for a business He allowed me to become a part of it in May of this year. It’s a Christian card company, SendOutCards, many of you have heard of it. I’m inspired to learn how we can help Charis’ Scholarship Fund and we are looking into that now. I'm also inspired to pass it along to anyone looking for a stay-at-home way of making a living.

Now for the explanation of my name change…God has blessed me with Darryl Hodges, a man of true character, loyalty, and honesty. A soul mate. A friend. Praise the Lord with me as we plan our wedding for January 1, 2010, when I will become Mrs. Tonya L. Hodges.

I am so thankful for my blessings of homebirths with Susan as my midwife, my connection to my home business, and this awesome, wonderful man, Darryl. In closing I claim Jeremiah 29:11, "...a future and a hope..." not only for my family but for all. God bless.

Tonya Lawrence

Charis Cuisine

Tangy Kale Salad
from Kristin Schuchmann's kitchen

Ingredients:

15 – 20 kale leaves (dinosaur kale works best, but curly kale is fine, too)

1/2 C cold pressed extra virgin olive oil

1/2 C fresh lemon juice

1/2 t sea salt

2 red bell peppers, diced

1/2 C pine nuts

1/2 C sliced kalamata olives

Directions:

Remove stems/ribs from kale leaves.

Stack about five kale leaves at a time and roll into a tight cylinder.

Using a sharp chef’s knife, slice through the roll to create thin ribbons of kale.

Place kale ribbons into a large bowl.

Pour olive oil, lemon juice and salt into bowl with kale and massage the mixture with your hands to break down the fibers in the kale until it wilts and softens.

Toss in bell peppers, pine nuts, and olives. Serve room temperature or cold.

This Mediterranean-style salad is a perfect side dish and is always a hit at pot lucks. The texture is like cooked kale, but the goodness of the enzymes, nutrients, and flavors are all still present.

'Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them from the ends of the earth,
Among  them the blind and the lame, The woman with child and The one who labors with child,  together,
A great throng shall return there...And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the LORD.'
