Our Director's Heart

Kristin Schuchmann

The entry into motherhood is such a sweet journey as a baby forms inside its mother’s womb and then is delivered into the world. The climax of that journey is the actual birth of the child, but it doesn’t end with those precious first moments of bonding as mother and baby. There is a critical time of discovering and embracing her new role in the weeks and months following her baby’s birth. Until the birth, her role is mainly an idea. Once she begins to walk it out, it becomes a reality that must be understood and accepted.

As women, we have the opportunity to come alongside our sisters and walk with them as they transition into motherhood. But how do we effectively do that? What do these new moms really need? What may hinder that process? What can smooth the way for the emergence of a strong, healthy mother-child relationship? What is our role?

After decades of watching hundreds of women enter motherhood, I have noticed something. They really don’t need to be told what to do or how to feel. They don’t need a book or seminar about parenting methodology. That seems to bring more confusion and fear than confidence and peace. They need to be surrounded by people who genuinely care about them, who believe in them, and who trust them. Rather than being told things, they need people who will ask them the right questions to draw out the mother that God is birthing in them.

Here’s to loving, supporting, and believing in new mothers!

'Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them from the ends of the earth,
Among  them the blind and the lame, The woman with child and The one who labors with child,  together,
A great throng shall return there...And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the LORD.'
