Our Charis Family

Rachael Steppe

Rachael and her fiancé, Kevin Schultz

Hi, Charis Friends,

My name is Rachael Steppe, I am 18 years old, and I have enrolled in the Charis Doula Childbirth Educator program.  I come from a family of 8, my two parents Vern and Pam, and my 5 siblings.  My brother Jake is 21, I'm 19, my sister Sarah 17, Lydia 13, Isabella 4 and Katarina 3.  This year, my brother is getting married to one of my best friends, Maria.  Their wedding is in June and we couldn’t be happier.  We are also planning my wedding to my Best Friend Kevin for January.

For the longest time, it was just the four of us older kids.  We had just moved into our newly built house on 75 acres when my parents sat all of us down for a talk.  My mom was told she had thyroid cancer.  It wasn’t one of the worst ones you could have, but it was still cancer.  A few weeks later, almost Christmas, mom’s surgery was being planned.  We kids were worried for our mom, she was getting sick, throwing up at any smell, and she actually could smell like a dog.  They sat us down again to give us an early Christmas gift, we open it up and it’s an ornament of a baby carriage.  We all kind of looked at each other like, “What?”  But then my brother and I put the pieces together.  My mom was Pregnant!!!!  And that was why she was so sick.  Nine months later, at 7:30 a.m., we welcome our new little sister Isabella into the world.  To me, at that moment, that was the most amazing thing in the world.  As much as I wanted to be in the delivery room, I wasn’t allowed that time.  About 16 months later, my parents take us to their favorite restaurant and announce that my mom was pregnant again!!!!  This time I was there for my mom’s every appointment and was helping her through everything I could during the pregnancy.  One night around 2 a.m., my mom woke me up and said “It’s time I remember this!!” I woke everyone up and we headed to the hospital.  When we arrived at the hospital, my parents told me I could be in the delivery room.  I was so excited that I was able to experience such a miracle that day.  At 4:20 a.m., we welcomed my little sister Katarina into the world.  That’s when I realized that I wanted to be a part of that; I wanted to help others experience that miracle of life.

Today my mom is doing great!  She underwent her surgery last October.  This year, there has been a lot of busy-ness and planning, with my Brother and I both getting married.  I am so excited to also be doing the Charis CE/Doula program and I can’t wait to see what God has in store for me!!

'Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them from the ends of the earth,
Among  them the blind and the lame, The woman with child and The one who labors with child,  together,
A great throng shall return there...And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the LORD.'
