Charis “Labor Support” Workshop
Saturday, October 11, 2014
9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
At
LifeSong Midwifery
in
North Port, Florida
For
childbirth educators, doulas, midwives, or anyone who would like to improve her
ability to support laboring women.
At our workshops, learning is interactive, hands-on, fun, and interesting. All
Charis workshops are taught from a Christian perspective, giving God the glory
for His marvelous creation and how He so wonderfully created women to bear
children.
You will spend the day making new friends and becoming more skilled in putting
to use many techniques to bring a woman comfort during each phase of labor,
understanding the science behind why the comfort measures work, creating an
environment conducive to the natural progression of labor, recognizing when a
woman is beginning to panic and helping her regain control, gently encouraging a
woman to effectively push out her baby while taking advantage of the natural
physiology of second stage, assisting a woman in breastfeeding for the very
first time, and so much more.
In addition to the valuable skills acquired at the workshop, you will also take
home with you a beautiful “labor support bag” filled with an assortment of tools
to help you successfully support, serve, and bring comfort to your future
clients as they labor.
A delicious lunch will be provided for all the workshop attendees to enjoy as
you get to know each other better during a midday break.
The cost is $225 for Charis members and $255 for non-members (includes one-year
Charis membership).

Our Director's Heart
Giving Honor where Honor is Due
Shortly after Susan & Kristin first met
Dear Charis
Family,
I am writing this “Director’s Heart” on May 5, International Day of the Midwife.
On this day every year (and many days in between), I think about the midwives in
my life who have taken the time to help me become the best midwife I can be.
Even though there are many midwives on my mind today, I want to honor one
midwife in particular right now: Susan Oshel.
Susan is a tender, humble woman who would never toot her own horn. If you
are reading this, then a large miracle took place and she allowed this to be put
in the newsletter. (Susan is the Charis newsletter editor and is the
artist and brains behind this lovely monthly publication. I am her boss,
so she might not have the option of not posting this.)
Ever since I met Susan in June of 1990, she has been the greatest source of
inspiration in my birth-work journey. The support, encouragement, and
accountability she gives is invaluable. She is the midwifery mentor that
many midwives wish they had. I have been enormously blessed by Susan and
am thrilled to know that there are up and coming midwives who are being touched
by her in profound ways as she coaches the Charis midwifery students. I
have said many times that having Susan as a mentor is, all by itself, worth
every penny our students pay in tuition.
Susan is a patient teacher. She understands that the journey is as
important as the destination and enjoys walking alongside our students as they
learn and grow. She is a good listener. She is loving and compassionate.
She is humble. She is brilliant.
Susan is not only book-knowledgeable, but she has decades of experience from
which to draw as she coaches our students. Serving in a rural setting
where medical care is not always easily accessible, she has had to obtain the
knowledge and skills necessary to handle just about any situation that may
arise. I can’t remember a time when I have asked her for help or advice
that she didn’t know the right herb, exercise, technique, remedy, explanation,
etc.; and I can’t remember a time when I put her advice into action that I
didn’t receive the results I was hoping to see.
One of the things I love about Susan is that she is always a student, always
seeking to learn new things and wise enough to know when the new things she is
learning should change the way she practices midwifery. I want to be just
like her.
Susan has
earned the confidence of the families she serves and the medical community with
which she has interfaced, and she is respected greatly amongst her peers.
Charis Childbirth is fortunate to have such a treasure in our “family”.
There is no way to calculate the enormous ripple effect Susan’s heart and
efforts to pour into the next generation will have. On behalf of the
hundreds of families I have served, THANK YOU, Susan, for all you do to make the
world a better place for expectant families. Every time I place my hands
on a growing belly, you have touched that life. I love you and appreciate
you so very much.
Blessings,
Kristin Schuchman, CPM, LM

Dear Charis Family, have you wondered about
our missing Tidbits From Ebony recently? Due
to security concerns, Elizabeth is not able to share her Tidbits
until later in the year. Thank you for continuing to pray for Ebony and
Elizabeth Carmichel! We love you Elizabeth and hold you deeply in prayer,
thank you for your service in His Kingdom! ~Charis
