Our Charis Family
Lisa Kreinbrook
Dear Charis Family,
Hello! My name is Lisa Kreinbrook and I am thrilled
to be starting the Charis Midwifery Course July 1st.
I'm counting the days! I've been married to David,
my wonderful husband, for 18 years. We've been
blessed with two sons, Judah (almost 17) and Seth
(12). They are both homeschooled. We currently
live in Silver Springs, Florida, but are
contemplating a move to Pennsylvania in the near
future. It's a town where my husband grew up and
where we spent the first few years of our married
life.
David is a chiropractor and has been instrumental in
my path toward becoming a doula and midwife. I'm so
grateful for his introduction to alternative
medicine, and so much more!
Having diabetes mellitus type 1, I was unable to
deliver our children at home. Even with our
hospital births, attended by obstetricians, I feel
very blessed. God was so merciful! I had a
wonderful one-on-one nurse for my first birth and a
doula for my second. I believe God gave me a
passion for birth through my own experiences. I'm
on a path to help other women make wise choices for their births
through excellent informed consent and support,
honoring their freedom to do so.
I originally trained with a different organization 7
years ago and became a certified doula. I had to
take a break for a few years and my certification
expired. My passion has always been to become a
midwife, but the door never opened. I had almost
given up on being involved in birth at all, and had
even started giving some of my books away. I
visited the Charis website several times over the
last few years and dreamed, but
couldn’t take the first step. A few months ago,
God provided the ability to open that door! Kristin
Schuchmann and I had a phone conference and the rest
is history (or more likely His Story).
I am grateful for the welcome I’ve received and am
looking forward to my journey to becoming a midwife.

Cuisine
Black Bean and Quinoa Burgers
recipe shared by Laura Hale
Jacob Hale enjoying his veggie burger.
I made some pretty yummy veggie burgers
I thought others would love. These
were even loved by my very picky,
bean-hating 5 year old. ~Laura
Hale
1 cup water
1/2 cup dry quinoa
1/4 onion diced
1 clove garlic diced finely
1 tsp olive oil
1 cup or 1 can of black beans (drained
and rinsed)
1/2 cup bread crumbs
2 tbsp parsley
salt & pepper to taste
1/4 tsp Cumin
dash of cayenne
2 tsp olive oil
Heat oil in a small pot, add onion and
sautée until softened. Add garlic
and sautée briefly. Add quinoa and 1 cup
water. Bring to boil, then reduce
heat and simmer until water is absorbed.
In a bowl combine beans, bread crumbs,
quinoa and spices. Using a spoon
or potato masher mix ingredients,
smashing the beans as you go, until the
mixture sticks together well.
Using 1/3 cup I made 6
burgers. Heat oil in a skillet,
place burgers in and brown each side.
Serve with your favorite burger
toppings.
Note from Susan Oshel: My
family is wheat-intolerant so we made
these burgers replacing bread crumbs
with organic corn chip crumbs. I
added the onions and garlic fresh
without sautéing them first and baked
the burgers in our toaster oven @200
degrees for 15 minutes. My husband
liked his baked, but I chose not to bake
mine, and just formed the ingredients
into patties and placed baked and
unbaked patties atop a beautiful bed of
lettuce with avocado and salsa on top.
So many ways to alter a yummy recipe to
fit personal preferences and needs!!
My picky eater husband loved them, too,
Laura!! Thank-you!!
