Charis “Labor Support” Workshop
Saturday, October 2, 2010 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Registration Form At Birthways Family Birth Center 4222 McIntosh Lane ~ Sarasota, FL 34232 For Childbirth Educators, Doulas, Midwives, or anyone who would like to improve her ability to support laboring women with excellence. At our workshops, learning is interactive, hands-on, fun, and interesting. You will spend the day making new friends and becoming more skilled in knowing how and when to use many techniques to bring a woman comfort during each phase of labor, understanding the science behind why the comfort measures work, creating an environment conducive to the natural progression of labor, recognizing when a woman is beginning to panic and helping her regain control, gently encouraging a woman to effectively push out her baby while taking advantage of the natural physiology of second stage, assisting a woman in breastfeeding for the very first time, and so much more. In addition to the valuable skills acquired at the workshop, you will also take home with you a beautiful “labor support bag” filled with an assortment of tools to help you successfully support, serve, and bring comfort to your future clients as they labor. A delicious lunch will be provided for all the workshop attendees to enjoy as you get to know each other better during a midday break. The cost is $200 for Charis members and $230 for non-members (includes one-year Charis membership). To register, complete the Registration Form and mail it, along with payment, to Charis Childbirth P.O. Box 6900 North Port, FL 34290 Registration must be received before September 10, 2010. Register early… Space is limited to the first 12 registrants. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Everyone had a GREAT time at the Charis "Teaching Birth" Workshop in February:
Tara Thessen working on writing her introduction she will be presenting in a few minutes...
"One of the things that surprised me initially was that the workshop didn't tell us 'what' to teach in the class. I thought I'd be attending a workshop that was going to essentially be a childbirth education crash course -> content and how to teach it. Instead, it focused on the soft skills of how to be a good educator. The workshop wasn't about what to teach itself, but how to help families come to their own best decisions, without you making them for them. We learned active listening skills, tools for keeping your students engaged, etc. I wasn't expecting that initially, but am so thankful that Charis is giving us the education to build our own teaching models and the workshop is what helps build confidence in our ability to do that."
Love & Blessings! ~ Tara Thessen

Everyone practices teaching at this workshop.
"My time at the Charis Teaching Birth workshop was very valuable. The highlights were spending time with Kristin and Susan. Wow, what a wealth of information and wisdom these women have to impart unto us students! And, meeting other women that carry the same passion was priceless. Some "gold nuggets" that I walked away with include the art of listening. How listening is something we need to practice and train ourselves to do as we serve our families and others! Also the importance of asking the right questions, choosing your words carefully! I'm totally looking forward to the next workshop!"~ Mary Ann Stoltzfus
Vicki Sink has us all convinced...
![]() "One might think that teaching birth would be simple and easy, but it is far from that! Some women, including myself once-upon-a-time, think that they know it all. They don't know that they have options. If you don't know what your options are, you don't have any! (I heard this saying the other day and it is oh so true!) The "Teaching Birth" Workshop taught us how, as childbirth educators, we need to GRAB the attention of our class, excite them about the miracle of birth, teach them into learning what their options are, and teach them how to make informed decisions! We practiced creating a safe environment and had yummy and healthy food for refreshments .... the very things we will be doing in our childbirth classes, actually show how healthy food is important for mommy and baby!" ~ Vicki Sink
Good nutrition in pregnancy and throughout life,
comparing our bodies with our vehicles ... "More than a workshop, it's an experience. After each "Teaching Birth Workshop" I always walk away with renewed wisdom on how to interface with all humans, how to truly coach, how to truly listen. A fantastic workshop for all healthcare professionals; nurses, midwives, doctors, and everyone who wants the tools to touch other's lives in a real and positive way. I appreciate the time and study Kristin Schuchmann has invested in learning (and teaching) the art of coaching. I'm also so proud of our students, they are devoted servants, ready to go deeper and climb higher!" ~ Susan Oshel

"I always have such a great time taking care of the nursing babies that accompany their mommies to the Charis workshops. I will never forget Tucker’s big, adorable smile and how he loves to “talk” with anyone who will give him attention. I can’t wait for next time!"
