Our Director's Heart

Kristin connecting
with Sarah's soon-to-be born baby
at her 36-week home prenatal visit.
The Baby Leaped in my
Womb for Joy!
“Now at this time Mary
arose and went in a hurry to the hill country, to a city of Judah, and
entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth
heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled
with the Holy Spirit. And she cried out with a loud voice and said,
‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
And how has it happened to me, that the mother of my Lord would come to me?
For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped
in my womb for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would
be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.’”
Luke 1:39-45
Reading this passage
from the Bible takes me down memory lane to 1995, when I was pregnant with
my daughter Joy. Whenever Todd would come home from work in the evening,
Joy would go crazy, wiggling and kicking as soon as she heard her Daddy’s
voice.
It is amazing how aware
babies are of what is going on in the world outside of the womb, showing
their personalities and preferences even before they are born. The story of
how John the Baptist sensed the presence of Jesus even when the two of them
were still growing in their mothers’ wombs is evidence that babies not only
physically participate in life before they are born, but are also
spiritually aware.
One of my favorite parts
of prenatal visits with the women I serve is placing my hands on the momma’s
belly and getting to know the baby growing inside her womb. Of course, I
check for baby’s position as any good midwife would do, but there is so much
more to it than that. I ask God to speak to my heart about the person He is
forming and there is a sweet interchange as I connect with that tiny person,
full of potential and ready to receive all the love I can give at that
moment.
We, in many ways, are
like those babies. They cannot see beyond their watery world, yet they are
aware that there is more to life than what they see. We live on Earth and
cannot physically see beyond this world, but sense spiritually that there is
a realm so much more glorious than where we currently are. We sense the
Holy Spirit moving. God places His hands on our lives, connects with us,
and imparts love and everything we need on a physical and spiritual level to
grow and fulfill our potential and purpose here on Earth and into eternity.
Mary’s response to
Elizabeth’s and John’s reaction to being in the presence of their Savior as
he was growing in her womb was heartfelt praise and worship to God:
“My soul exalts the
Lord,
And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave;
For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed.
For the Mighty One has done great things for me;
And holy is His name.
And His mercy is
upon generation after generation
Toward those who fear Him.”
(Luke
1:46-50)
As we celebrate the
birth of Christ—God becoming flesh and living among us—may we keep in
mind also His death—paying the penalty for sin—and resurrection from
the dead—making a way for us to live for eternity in His presence, a
realm we have not yet seen, but sense in a tangible, real way even now.
And may it bring us to a place of uncontainable praise, worship, and JOY!
Merry Christmas, Charis
Family!
