Our Charis Family

Terri Henady

Terri and new grandbaby, Jack

Hello Charis friends! I am a student in the Charis doula/childbirth educator track and live with my family in beautiful southwest Florida.

I have four children: Kristin, Canaan, Matthew, and Alyssa (Ali). They are all grown and live in Pennsylvania, except for Ali, who is 16 and finishing her last year of high school.  I also have 2 “adopted” children, my son in law Alex and my daughter in law Victoria, who just married my son Canaan 3 short weeks ago.  My husband Greg and I were blessed just five weeks ago by the birth of our first grandchild, Jack.  I was able to be present at his birth and stay with him (and his parents) the first 3 weeks of his life.  It’s been an exciting summer in our family!

I’ve been through the whole range of birth experiences.  My first child was a Caesarean, my second was a hospital vbac (vaginal birth after cesarean section) with induction and pain medication, my third was a natural vbac in a hospital with a nurse-midwife, and my last one was a natural vbac at home.  After I had the Caesarean, I was very disappointed by my birth experience and went through a difficult time of resentment and grief.  As part of the healing process, I began to research obstetrical practices in America and the whole process of birthing.  I even seriously considered becoming a childbirth educator at this point, but by then I had my hands full with 3 young children and had just begun homeschooling, so I decided that was just not possible at the time.

In 2012, facing the final leg of my homeschooling journey and with an empty nest looming in the not-so-distant future, I began to seek God concerning what He wanted for me for the next phase of my life.  He gently reminded me of that long-ago dream I’d had of being a childbirth educator.  With the full support and encouragement of my husband, I took the plunge into the Charis program in April, 2013.  It has been such an exciting learning journey ever since, and I see God’s hand in every bit of it.

My desire is to help women to have the birthing support and education everyone deserves. Whether that is locally, on the mission field, or both, I’m not sure yet, but I know as I continue to walk this journey out, God will continue to refine my focus and give me opportunities to serve Him through serving women.  What a wonderful joy and privilege!

'Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them from the ends of the earth,
Among  them the blind and the lame, The woman with child and The one who labors with child,  together,
A great throng shall return there...And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the LORD.'
