Charis Around the World

Life In Ukraine
Anne Sokol

Educating Midwives and Doulas

In Ukraine, homebirth midwives teach couples a long series of childbirth preparation classes, then they attend the birth. They don’t provide prenatal care as we know it, like checking blood pressure, urine, blood values, etc. Their means of attaining knowledge and experience varies a lot.

In Ukraine, there are no classes or study materials designed for homebirth midwives or doulas or childbirth educators. No one offers seminars or courses. There are no groups or organizations of fellowship among those in this profession. Doulas are pretty much unheard of still.

Homebirth midwives here are pretty secretive about their practices and knowledge, as competition is fierce and relationships not very friendly. Their knowledge and experience is not something they give away; it has a price. Things like apprenticeship relationships don’t really exist here yet. How a woman becomes a homebirth midwife in Ukraine is very individual and often doesn’t involve formal study.

Charis’ program would definitely be one-of-a-kind here. Nothing like it exists yet! How amazing—to open the doors of knowledge and education to anyone who wanted to study these topics; to end the secretive grasp of birth knowledge, to encourage structured study through pregnancy and childbearing topics; to put this information into the hands of average women here.

Translating the Charis materials into Russian would be a great testimony—that Christians are in the vanguard of right changes, of disseminating the freedom and responsibility that comes with truth and knowledge, of encouraging study and discernment.  What a force God can use for birth change here!

Love, Anne

Hello Friends,

It is time for Charis to begin translating our materials into other languages!!!

So far, all of our students have been fluent in English, but we knew eventually we would have students who need the books and materials in other languages.

So the first language translation will be …(((drum roll)))… Russian! There are currently two Ukrainian ladies who want to go through the Charis doula training, so it is time to translate! That takes time and money.

If you are excited that we have the opportunity to take the Charis ministry into Russian-speaking countries, please help us out! Send your donations to Charis Childbirth at P.O. Box 6900, North Port, FL 34290. Please write on a separate note (not on your check) that your donation is for the Russian translation project.

THANK YOU!!!!!

'Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them from the ends of the earth,
Among  them the blind and the lame, The woman with child and The one who labors with child,  together,
A great throng shall return there...And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the LORD.'
