Our Charis Family

Emily Palisano

Hello Charis family,

My name is Emily Palisano. I’m 48 years old, or how my grandson D’mari likes to say, “Almost a half a century old”.  (He used to be my favorite.) I now live in sunny Florida after escaping New York City around twenty years ago. Florida is where I met and married my husband Kenneth (who hates it if you call him Kenny) eleven years ago. He loves the Lord and is a child-like grandfather of thirteen, with one more on the way. I thank God for him because without his support I would not be able to follow my hopes and desires to become a doula. You may wonder how we ended up with thirteen grandchildren in eleven short years. We are the modern day Brady bunch, his three children and my three children. We are completely in love with all our grandkids, I often wonder why we couldn’t have them first. On occasion I might mention to my children how I don’t recall loving them this much (just kidding). I think if you have grandkids, you have the right to talk about them all you want.

I'd like to share a few things about myself, the most important is my desire to serve the Lord in any way possible.  Teaching bible studies makes me feel alive, and being the nursery director for the last twelve years keeps me young. I volunteer in a ministry called healing rooms once a week to pray for the sick. I am passionate about praying for the sick, but nothing excites me more than to hear testimony of how people have come to the Lord. If I had hobbies, they would be alligator wrestling, sky diving, mountain climbing and deep sea diving.

Way back when I was pregnant with my second child I waddled into a newly built birthing center in the Bronx. I had never heard of a midwife before, but after my experience at the center I knew I would never give birth at a hospital again. I loved my midwife so much that I decided to have another child to maintain our relationship. They have the best job in the world and I knew someday I would work alongside of them any way I could. After becoming a regular (frequent deliverer), I could not pass a pregnant woman on the street without practically begging her to go check out the birthing center. As much as I thought that was the way to go, I have come to a new conclusion, home birth rocks, WOW!

When my oldest daughter Stephanie decided to have a home birth after two cesareans I was concerned; but, she did her homework and found the best midwife ever, Kristin Schuchmann.  (I am sure all who know her would agree.) Kristin’s birth assistants who attended the birth and Stephanie’s doula (Charis doula Terri Henady) are all VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) moms, so Stephanie had her own support team of super heroes.

Kristin was incredible, she led, yet she allowed Stephanie to be free and feel in charge. She did good without a show or fuss, all with a smile. This birth made Stephanie feel strong, competent and capable. Witnessing my daughter Stephanie’s home birth, I now have a new-found respect for midwives.

Kristin, Véda Seren and Stephanie

Stephanie’s pregnancy with Véda Seren rekindled a spark in me to go after my almost-lost dream to become a Doula. By the way the name Véda means “sacred knowledge”, which is now the name of my Doula services.

I am continually aware of God’s favor and faithfulness in my life. He has arranged every detail down to the funding of my program. A very good friend told me that she felt God was leading her to invest in God’s Kingdom by sponsoring me and taking care of my tuition and fees. What an awesome God we serve!

Ephesians 3:20 Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.

'Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them from the ends of the earth,
Among  them the blind and the lame, The woman with child and The one who labors with child,  together,
A great throng shall return there...And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the LORD.'
