Charis Membership
We at Charis are extremely grateful for our wonderful members.
This past year, your dues have made it financially possible for
us to creatively correspond with people in areas of the world
where internet is spotty at best. Having all forms of
communication available for us is essential if we are going to
successfully train birth professionals in the far reaches of the
earth. As our community of members grows, there will be more
funds available for even more world-impacting outreach. Thank
you!
Membership is due every December 31 for the coming calendar
year. So, if you became a member on or before December 31,
2014, your dues should be mailed by the middle of December,
2015, to be sure it is received in time. If you become a member
sometime in 2015, then your membership renewal is not due until
December 31, 2016.

Our Director's Heart

Kristin Schuchmann and grandson, Eric
“Do Fun Stuff”
Yesterday, at six-something in the morning, my three-year-old grandson came
running into my bedroom, plopped a basket of toys on my bed, and said, “Nannie,
it’s a new day! Do fun stuff!!!” It isn’t unusual for the two of us to begin our
day playing on my bed with whatever toys he brings in. It’s the benefit of
having multiple generations living under the same roof. But yesterday is the
first time he said those exact words as he climbed up for our play time.
I had my day pretty planned out and it didn’t include much “fun stuff”. I’m
behind on a lot of things (including writing this, as it is due to be turned in
to Susan by the 5th of the month and today is the 9th) and planned to spend the
day getting caught up with a lot of paperwork, charting, and other things that
aren’t very enjoyable for me. But then, Charis certified postpartum doula Ginjah
Gardner, who happens to live down the street from me, sent me a text message
asking if I could go walking with her. My calendar didn’t have a blank spot for
walking, but that little voice saying, “Do fun stuff!” echoed in my mind and I
replied with a YES! And I’m so glad I did.
Birth work can become all-consuming. What we do is extremely important and we
really should be committed to excellence. How can we care for others with
excellence, however, when we aren’t caring for ourselves properly? That is the
recipe for burnout—and I refuse to go there again. Adrenal depletion is
devastating.
Ginjah and I walked through parts of the property where she lives that she
hasn’t yet explored and then walked a bit down the street. We experienced
nature, enjoyed uplifting conversation, talked about what God has been speaking
to us through His Word, and soaked up the love of true friendship. Instead of
feeling drained at the end of the day, I was still on a happy high from the time
I spent doing “fun stuff”.
I didn’t accomplish everything I hoped to accomplish yesterday, but today is a
new day and I will work on what I didn’t get done yesterday… and I will take my
grandson’s advice and do “fun stuff”. I hope you will take his advice, too!
Blessings,
Kristin Schuchmann, LM, CPM
