Isaiah,
Katie, DeAndre and Armand Tinker
Hello everyone! My name is Katie Tinker and I am from Perry, IA. I'm
27 years old and am married with two children, Isaiah (4 years old) and Armand
(2 years old). DeAndre and I were married in June of 2003 and had our two boys in
July of '05 and February of '07. Both of my babies were delivered in
a hospital with an O.B. It was after those experiences that led me
to seek other birthing options.
At
the time we birthed our children, I was unaware of childbirth
options, and unaware of midwifery care. I had absolutely no
clue what a doula was! I was researching different options online
for childbirth because I was planning on having another baby. I
wanted to do something different since my last pregnancies were
healthy and the babies were born healthy. I thought it would be a
good idea to go with a midwife the next time around. I had also been
toying with the idea of going to nursing school with hopes of
working in the labor and delivery unit.
This was just an idea and I wasn't sure what I really thought about
actually doing it. Then, in January of 2009 I found out I was
pregnant again. I was very nervous about it because my husband and I
were going through financial difficulty beyond what we had ever
experienced at this point and we were a little scared. We prayed and
put our trust in the Lord and started to make plans for the baby and
were looking at names, buying things and figuring out a way to
better our finances. Then at my 10 week appointment I found out that
my baby had died at 6 weeks and that I was going to miscarry
shortly.
It
was the worst thing my husband and I have ever gone through. I
know it could have been much worse, and that other people go
through worse things than I could imagine. Still, it was very
hard. We were so disappointed and confused. My husband is a big man
and intimidates some people when they first see him, but he has such
a gentle heart and absolutely loves babies. It was heartbreaking to
watch him go through this with me. Through that painful time we felt
God so close to us. He never left me. Without His love and mercy, we
could not have gotten through it.
After that experience I realized that I really wanted to work with
childbearing women and their families. I felt God opened my eyes to
what He wanted me to do. I had been stuck in a rut and He took me
out and put a passion in my heart for other women going through
pregnancy and birth. I started looking for ways that I could become
involved and do something in this area and I found Charis
Childbirth while looking online. I felt God led me to this school
and I am so happy to be a part of it! I am learning a lot and am
looking forward to getting to know all of you! God bless!
