Our
Director's Heart

On the
heels of the recent reports of studies showing the safety of home
birth with a qualified midwife, we dedicate this issue of the Charis
newsletter to birth at home.
On August 31, 2009, the Canadian Medical Association Journal
reported on a study of home birth with the conclusion that “Planned
home birth attended by a registered midwife was associated with very
low and comparable rates of perinatal death and reduced rates of
obstetric interventions and other adverse perinatal outcomes
compared with planned hospital birth attended by a midwife or
physician.” Earlier, the June 2005 issue of the British Medical
Journal featured the CPM 2000 study, the largest prospective study
of planned home birth with a direct-entry midwife, and came to the
same conclusion: that homebirth is as safe as hospital birth for low
risk women, yet carries a much lower rate of medical interventions,
including Cesarean section. This, of course, is what midwives and
home birthing families have known all along. It is delightful to see
the wonderful truth in publication.
As a result, I would like to applaud four groups of people:
First, I want to thank the doctors out there who have worked
collaboratively with home birth midwives so that when transfer of
care is needed, there is a smooth transition for the family. Your
support of midwifery is a huge blessing to birthing families!
Next, I’m not sure that there is a way to adequately show our love
and gratitude for the excellent midwives who have tirelessly,
selflessly given of themselves to ensure that women can have a safe
and satisfying birth at home. You are priceless treasures within
your communities!
Third, a huge round of applause needs to go out to all the senior
midwives, who have caught the vision of “each one teach one”, who
have become trusted teachers and have taken the time to pass along
their wisdom and skills to the next generation of midwives. Thank
you for not keeping it to yourselves. It is because of you that
there is a future for midwifery and home birth!
And, lastly, kudos to the expectant moms who have researched and
studied and learned about pregnancy and birth so that they could
make quality, informed decisions concerning their care, who have
changed their diet in order to best nourish themselves and their
babies, who have stayed fit during their pregnancies so that they
were physically ready for birthing day. Your lifestyle and positive
choices are the biggest reason YOU succeeded in your healthy birth
within the safety and comfort of your own home!
It is because of all of you that home birth remains a good choice
for birthing families.
With love, respect, and gratitude,
