Did the birth
professionals in your community attend the Charis "Labor Support" Workshop?
If so, you are in for a treat! The ladies who attended can't wait to put
into practice all that they learned! Birth professionals,
students and others gathered at
LifeSong Midwifery
in North Port, Florida improving their abilities to support laboring women with
excellence. The day was filled with interactive, hands-on, fun, and
interesting activities taught from a Christian perspective, giving God the glory
for His marvelous creation and how He so wonderfully created women to bear
children.
We made new friends and became more skilled in knowing how and when to use many
techniques to bring a woman comfort during each phase of labor, understanding
the science behind why the comfort measures work, creating an environment
conducive to the natural progression of labor, recognizing when a woman is
beginning to panic and helping her regain control, gently encouraging a woman to
effectively push out her baby while taking advantage of the natural physiology
of second stage, assisting a woman in breastfeeding for the very first time, and
so much more.
In addition to the valuable skills acquired at the workshop, we also took home a
beautiful “labor support bag” filled with an assortment of tools to help
successfully support, serve, and bring comfort to future clients as they labor.
After
enjoying dinner at Sharky’s Friday night, we had the opportunity to go out onto
the beach to watch the beautiful sunset over the Gulf of Mexico, one of
Kristin’s favorite ways to wind down and one of the great benefits of holding
workshops in “paradise”.

Ginjah Gardner (with Athena Hicks), and Christy Hicks on the beach after dinner
Friday night.
Kristin started the
day with an in-depth study of the physiology of pain and pain relief.

What a
WONDERFUL time we had at this year’s “Labor Support” Workshop! I
thoroughly enjoyed spending the weekend with the attendees!
Aspiring midwives, doulas, childbirth educators, and others learned
the physiology of pain and pain relief and became much more skilled
and comfortable serving laboring moms. Their communities will be
tremendously blessed by the skills they learned and honed at the
workshop. Can’t wait for next time!

Executive Director, Charis Childbirth, Inc. |
Michelle &
Terri practicing supported squatting.
It is extra
challenging for a “short” person to support a “tall” person…
but Lisa proved that it can be done!
Aspiring
midwife Rose helping Kristin to demonstrate the half-kneel/half-squat.
This is what
happens when you squat with your feet flat on the floor!
Squatting!
Enjoying activities to help us understand the different sensory nerve
pathways
so we understand why our labor support techniques really work.
|
I benefited from the knowledge of how pain relief techniques affect the
physiological process of birth. Acupressure and other techniques connected
to the physiology are very important and will benefit childbirth education in my
community in understanding how it works and why.
-Terri Henady, Charis CE/Doula Student |
Kristin
explains the activity: Lisa is the moist hot compress, Ginjah is the
fast-moving nerve fiber, Terri is the pain stimulus, Ali (her daughter) is
the slow-moving nerve fiber, Christy is the dorsal horn of the spinal cord,
Rose is the middle brain, and Michelle (you can’t see her) is the cerebral
cortex.
Enjoying our activities.
Lots of wisdom
shared!
Lisa has the
answers!

The hands-on portion of this workshop was very beneficial. Education and
confirmation of assisting correctly in positions and techniques will help me
help my clients. The heart of Kristin Schuchmann and her passion shines through
making it a fabulous day!
-Lisa Kreinbrook, Charis Midwifery Student |
Kristin
demonstrated many techniques to help with back labor.

Learning rebozo
techniques.
|
I especially liked the Rebozo and acupressure techniques to comfort laboring
moms, that women are truly designed to birth naturally, and there are as many
ways to halt that God-given ability as there are to promote that magnificent
process.

Charis CE/Doula Student |

Michelle
|
I appreciate the reminder of how the baby is in the process of birth as a unique
person also going through the journey with Mom as a "team" vs. being detached or
seen as a "medical issue" that needs to be resolved.

I learned so much about birth! Many of the little details helped me reconcile
some of my issues about my own daughter's birth. I love Kristin's manner of
teaching. She has such a wealth of knowledge! Although I did tons of research
before my daughter's birth, I feel even more prepared for potential future
births. I feel my expectations for birth are now more reasonable and complete.
-Christy Hicks, Charis Administrative Assistant |
Look who showed
up at the end of the workshop! Brycin loves his midwife Kristin!
Ginjah getting
some baby love from Brooklyn, who stopped by at the end of the workshop.

over and these ladies are ready to bless their communities with the
information, skills, and tools they acquired at the Charis “Labor Support”
workshop.

'Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them
from the ends of the earth,
Among them the blind and the lame,
The woman with child and The one who labors with child, together,
A
great throng shall return there...And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the LORD.'
