Our Director's Heart

Delilah Lickiss
What is YOUR story?
When meeting birth workers or aspiring birth workers, I love to ask about their
story. Seasoned birth workers share amazing tales of love, family, birth, death,
miracles, exhaustion, exhilaration, and fulfillment. Those who aspire to work
with expectant families tell of the ache in their hearts to serve women and
babies. There is always a story about what led to the moment midwives (or
doulas)-to-be realized they could no longer be satisfied in life if they did not
pursue this sacred work.
Birth work is a unique calling unlike most other professions. It requires a
special skill set, quite a bit of sacrifice, tons of genuine love for people,
and commitment to excellence that is rare. These attributes catapult a person
into a journey filled with book-worthy adventures.
Where are you in your journey? Are you heading toward retirement, ready to write
the final chapters of your book? Are you in the midst of serving a beautifully
diverse population of growing families in your community, creating chapter after
chapter of encounters with new life? Are you just now ready to answer the call
to make an impact in the lives of families in your community, penning the
preface to unimaginable birth encounters to come?
Many people who serve birthing families do write books. I encourage you to read
their autobiographies and be encouraged and inspired. There are some, however,
whose stories were not written and whose work is nearly forgotten. In the next
Charis e-newsletter, I will share with you about one such amazing midwife,
Delilah Lickiss, who served her midwest community in the early to mid-1900s. Her
story has never been written, but her impact is immeasurable. My goal is to give
the world a little glimpse into the life of this small-town homemaker and the
difference she made in the world.
What will you do today and tomorrow to ensure that your story leaves a positive,
lasting imprint on your community? Birth workers are influencers. Thank you for
making the world a better place!
Blessings,
Kristin Schuchmann, LM, CPM

Update
Charis Membership
We at Charis are extremely grateful for our wonderful members.
This past year, your dues have made it financially possible for
us to creatively correspond with people in areas of the world
where internet is spotty at best. Having all forms of
communication available for us is essential if we are going to
successfully train birth professionals in the far reaches of the
earth. As our community of members grows, there will be more
funds available for even more world-impacting outreach. Thank
you!
Membership is due every December 31 for the coming calendar
year. So, if you became a member on or before December 31,
2016, your dues should be mailed by the middle of December,
2017, to be sure it is received in time. If you become a member
sometime in 2017, then your membership renewal is not due until
December 31, 2018.
You can send your
membership form and $30 dues to:
