Our
Director's Heart
To “The Men”
As
Father’s Day approaches, I think about the hundreds of fathers I
have gotten to know through serving as a doula and childbirth
educator. It has been a huge honor to be part of such
important family events and I am blessed to have had the opportunity
to watch your families grow. Childbearing is about families and dads
are a VERY important part of pregnancy and birth. Your babies
NEED you to be involved right from the start. I want to take
this opportunity to shout out a BIG “Thank You!” to all the dads out
there who have stepped up, been “The Man”, embraced fatherhood, and
walked lovingly alongside the mothers of your babies throughout
pregnancy, birth, and beyond. You are a blessing to your families
and your dedication, commitment, time, effort, sacrifice, and love
will have a ripple effect throughout coming generations as you
provide such a strong, powerful example of fatherhood to your
children.
Happy Father’s Day!

Breast Anatomy ~ Old
Diagrams Were Wrong
Rachel
Thompson, a Charis certified Childbirth Educator/Doula and aspiring
midwife in Midlothian, Virginia, sent me the following note recently
after attending a breastfeeding seminar:
“The diagrams (of the female breast) that have been used for 150
years are based on the work of Sir Astley Cooper (1840). He examined
the breast and mammary glands of a cadaver by injecting hot wax into
the nipple pore--a different color into each opening. The process
revealed that there are 9-12 separate lobes within the breast and
seemed to show bulges in the ducts, in the areola area, just before
they emptied out of the nipple, which have been known all this time
as the lactiferous ducts. However, recent research has shown that
these lactiferous ducts or sinuses simply aren't there. It seems
that the reason is that as Sir Cooper was injecting the hot wax into
the duct, the pressure caused the duct to expand.”
Charis Childbirth is committed to excellence in education, so we
will be changing the diagrams in our manual to reflect these
findings. I encourage all of our students, members, parents, and
practicing birth professionals to visit the following sites to learn
