Our Charis Family

Makayla Hunt

A big warm hello to all of the Charis family. My name is Makayla Hunt and I would like to begin by saying what a privilege it is to have my story featured in this edition of the Charis newsletter. I have been graciously asked to share with you a little bit about myself. So here is a small glimpse into the everyday, busy life of a southern country girl. :)

My family and I live on a hobby farm, in North Carolina. Our little farm consists of some chickens, cows, guineas, and a chocolate lab. I am the oldest of five children, and just turned 21. I was homeschooled all my life and graduated in 2013 as our family’s first homeschooled student. Since then I have been helping out here at home and in church, babysitting, and praying about which direction to go in life. My siblings and I also play instruments and help out with the music at our church. Our instruments include a guitar, fiddle, mandolin, bass, and hopefully very soon a piano.

My heart’s desire is first and foremost to serve the Lord, but hopefully one day to become a stay-at-home wife and mother! In the mean-time, waiting and trying to be content until that time arrives, let’s just say can be rather difficult some days. At the same time, trying to seek out what plans the Lord may have in store for my life and trying to figure out what direction to go in life is also very difficult. Like our pastor has said many times, our life is like a puzzle, we only see one small piece at a time, but the Lord sees the big picture. Waiting and trusting are easier some days than others!

Children hold a special place in my heart and I love working with them. At this season in life, the Lord has brought some very special little people into my life and allowed me the privilege of being a part of their lives. Currently I am babysitting full time and loving every minute of it. (or let’s say almost every minute!) There is never a dull moment and they are always surprising me in a variety of ways. Some good and some not so good!!

Missions has been another thing that has always held its own special place in my heart. Maybe one day, Lord willing, the skills that I learn can be used not only to serve here at home, but maybe in another country where there is a need. The Lord has opened a door and at the beginning of December, Lord willing, I will be going on a mission trip to Peru. We will be ministering to children in orphanages and helping serve at Christmas banquets given for local pastors and their wives. This is an exciting time and I would greatly appreciate prayers for safety and that we will have a fruitful time ministering.

The question has been asked, how did you become interested in becoming a doula? Well, I’m not for sure exactly how it all came about, but it all seemed to start when I found an advertisement in magazine about a Christian midwife program in Arkansas and from there I became interested. So, in the beginning, I was looking into becoming a midwife. After I started talking to a few people, they suggested completing a doula program first and then pursing midwifery from there.

So, I embarked on the journey of researching doula programs and out of all the many ones that I looked into, Charis seemed to be the one that really stood out. What stood out to me is the fact that Charis is taught from a Christian perspective and seems to go more in depth with the training than what just a weekend class would offer. Speaking for myself, I want to make sure that I learn and thoroughly know the concepts and material being taught before trying to share or help someone else. Which is a good thing, but needs to be kept in check so it doesn’t get carried to an extreme where it becomes stressing instead of enjoying during the process of learning. :)

I began the doula program the beginning of April 2016 and I’m still tryin’ to get into the swing of things.

At this point of time, I’m trying to balance work, school, & family! As ya’ll know this is quite a daunting challenge and some days seems impossible! But as the Bible says, “Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.” 1 Thessalonians 5:24 My favorite bible verse, and one that is always a source of comfort is “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” Psalm 32:8

There is so much to learn, but already I have learned a great deal and it is amazing to see the marvelous way the Lord has created each one of us. Each life is a miracle and holds a special place in our Creator’s heart. His hands have fashioned and created each of us to fulfill an important task in life. Our utmost desire in life is to surrender our life to Him, allowing ourselves to be used by the Lord to reach out and help those around us,

So, once again I’m excited to begin and see what doors the Lord will open for me as I begin this new stage in life.

Blessings to each of you.

In His Steps,
Makayla

'Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them from the ends of the earth,
Among  them the blind and the lame, The woman with child and The one who labors with child,  together,
A great throng shall return there...And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the LORD.'
 Jeremiah 31:8, 14
