Charis "Communication, Teaching, and Coaching" Workshop
Was held Saturday, March 21,
2015
At
LifeSong Midwifery in North Port,
Florida
Some
of the ladies enjoyed Friday evening dinner on the Gulf coast.
Sarah Gardner, Misty Coffey, Kristin Schuchmann, Carole-Lee
Schuchmann, Becky Rosser and Hannah Price.
As they watched the sun set
they were filled with anticipation
for the workshop bright and early the next morning!
They spent the
day making new friends and becoming more skilled in preparing effective
introductions, asking powerful questions, creating a learner-friendly
environment, capturing the attention of learners, helping clients embrace their
responsibility of making informed decisions, and so much more.
In addition to the valuable skills acquired at the workshop, they also took home
an assortment of visual aids and other valuable teaching tools to
enhance their future students’ learning experience.

There were many things I learned at this workshop; however, the
greatest, and, I think the most important is how to REALLY listen
and how to ask questions. When serving women or just in life
in general I need to listen and not jump to solving the problem or
voicing my opinion. I also learned helpful tools to leading
childbirth classes that I look forward to using in my own classes.
I'm excited to take away what I've learned about listening and
asking and seeing the difference it makes in relationships, both
professional and personal.

There
are a few highlights I'm taking home with me after attending
this workshop. 1- Learning to turn off my thoughts to
listen to the other person. (A lot easier said than
done!!) 2 - Creating safe environments for those I work
with, both professional and personal. 3 - Coming up with
great hooks and icebreakers. (If you want to know what
that means come to the next Charis "Communication, Teaching and
Coaching" workshop!) 4 - How to step back when engaging
with others, I don't necessarily have the answers.

The
communication segment of this workshop really challenged me to
consider how I ask questions and listen to clients, or anyone
really. I feel determined to practice listening more carefully
and probing for the heart of the issue. It was also delightful
to be with other women who are excited and enthusiastic about
childbirth and assisting mammas.

Throughout this workshop I learned skills for being a better
communicator by becoming a better listener. I'm so excited
to help my family and friends come to their own conclusions and
be more empowered. I'm excited to not feel obligated and
pressured to solve problems for people, but to be a helper and
support for them to come up with their own solutions.

I learned so
much! The class was interactive and taught me how to best
communicate with expectant parents. The training I received
today showed me how to be a better listener, really get to know
clients, and to keep a childbirth class interesting and helpful!
It even taught me how to better my own personal relationships!

In this workshop
it was extremely helpful to learn about the art of listening,
truly listening, and asking the right questions. I will
continue to practice! I loved all the fun interactive
games we learned to bring to the clients and families we serve.
"Hooks" were also helpful in drawing people in to hear the
important info we have to share. All these things will
help me become a better doula.

During this
workshop I discovered how important the location and environment of
your childbirth class is. I loved the hooks and am looking
forward to using more of them! Amazing how important it is to
ask "powerful questions" - I need lots of practice. It was
very helpful to put everything into "action" during this workshop.
Some of my favorite games were the weight gain sheet in pregnancy
and the "I can" can. Kristin is so encouraging, knowledgeable
and fun! The listening skills will help me serve families
better.

I learned how
important communication is and I learned so much from the "ask
bigger questions" part of the workshop. I feel overall this
was an excellent learning experience and I am so thankful I could be
a part of it!
