Charis
"Teaching Birth" Workshop
Was held Saturday,
March 5, 2011
at
Birthways Family Birth Center in Sarasota, Florida
We spent the day
making new friends and becoming more skilled in preparing effective
introductions, asking powerful questions, creating a
learner-friendly environment, capturing the attention of learners,
helping clients embrace their responsibility of making informed
decisions, and so much more.
In addition to the valuable skills acquired at the workshop, we also
took home with us an assortment of visual aids and other valuable
teaching tools to enhance our future students’ learning experience.

What a wonderful time we all had at the Charis “Teaching Birth”
Workshop at the beginning of March! It was such a treat to get
to meet so many of you face to face for the very first time and
to see so many others again! A HUGE thank-you goes out to my
administrative assistant, Sheri Hunt, for making it all happen
and to Charis’s Director of Midwifery Studies Susan Oshel and
Charis midwifery student Kate McKinney for helping us out on the
day of the workshop so everything flowed so smoothly. I know I
have said it before, but I really do love surrounding myself
with brilliant people!
~
Kristin Schuchmann, Executive
Director, Charis Childbirth, Inc.

More than a workshop, it's an experience. After each
"Teaching Birth Workshop" I always walk away with renewed inspiration
and wisdom on
how to interface with all humans, how
to truly coach, how to truly listen. A fantastic workshop for
all healthcare professionals; nurses, midwives, doctors, and
everyone who wants the tools to touch other's lives in a real
and positive way. I appreciate the time and study Kristin
Schuchmann has invested in learning (and teaching) the art of
coaching. I'm also so proud of our students, they are
devoted servants, ready to go deeper and climb higher!

Saturday morning bright and early at
Birthways Family Birth Center
in Sarasota, Florida
I
enjoyed the "Teaching Birth" Workshop very much. I always
gather so many nuggets of useful information from these workshops,
and the fellowship is priceless. We studied a lot about
effective communication which can be used in a class setting and
also in one-on-one discussion with expectant couples. I
especially enjoyed the "hooks" and also the ideas for learning aids
shared by the other Charis students. I definitely recommend
this class to anyone interested in offering support to pregnant
women and their families.
~
Esther
Smith, Charis Midwifery Student

The "Teaching Birth" Workshop was so informative. Many of the
ideas that were shared could also be used in other teaching
applications. The teaching on listening and asking questions
were a great encouragement to me. Once again, my daughter and
I will return home challenged and motivated. This workshop was
truly a blessing!
~ Ellen Smith, Mother of Esther Smith, Charis Midwifery Student

Hannah Johnson and Carrie Hartman

I very much enjoyed getting to know other Charis students and
finding others in similar walks of life and with similar interests
(midwifery and other). The various activities in the workshop
were interesting and innovative, with much creativity and room for
thinking outside the box. I've come away very excited and
motivated about teaching childbirth education classes and look to
moms and dads being more aware of choices and me being better able
to serve and communicate with them. I also LOVE the posters
and teaching aids we received!
~ Hannah Johnson, RN, Charis Midwifery Student

I learned that educating people about pregnancy and birth is not
just about teaching, but rather listening and asking good questions.
The power of a good question is way more effective than any lecture
I could give.
~ Carrie Hartman, RN, Charis Midwifery Student

Paula Malcein and Jessie Biggs

The
greatest lesson for me was learning the art of listening.
During the whole workshop I kept thinking of powerful questions and
answers that would probe into hearts and minds while enjoying
everyone's presentations. I always want to keep as my
main focus, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
None of this I can do on my own and if I rely on my own wisdom and
power I will fall short miserably. God is so good and I thank
Him for bringing me to this wonderful workshop and I pray that I can
be a blessing to everyone around me.
~ Paula Malcein, Charis Midwiery Student

Having
completed this workshop, I feel more confident in my ability to
communicate what I've learned so that others can gain that knowledge
and really retain it! It was also wonderful to be creative as
a group, coming up with interesting learning activities, practicing
asking the right questions rather than just giving right answers.
It was amazing to share, learn and laugh with my fellow Charis
students as well! Thank-you Kristin and Susan.
~ Jessie Biggs, Charis Doula/CE student

I just
want to express my appreciation for being invited to the Charis
"Teaching Birth" Workshop ! I really enjoyed it - it was well done and
professional, as always, and I knew I would come away having learned
something new that I can apply in my own classes. The posters are
wonderful too - thank you so much. I appreciate the chance to be
included!

Chantal Wilford, CE / Doula

The
"Teaching Birth" workshop was a great experience for me as an
aspiring doula and childbirth educator as well as an aspiring
midwife. It was my first workshop with Charis and I'm looking
forward to workshops in the future because they are not only very
concise and a great resource, but also an amazing encouragement.
I was thoroughly impressed with how professional everything was,
from the hand-outs and take-home pages to Kristin's presentations.
The location was a great choice, also. I learned so much new
material and feel that even those who have been birth professionals
for sometime can take something new away from this workshop.
Anyone can be encouraged, both as a birth professional or as an
expectant mom, from our rich experiences during our time together.
~ Bethany Stricker, Charis Midwifery Student

to describe
the importance of
nutrition in pregnancy and lactation.

The
"Teaching Birth" Workshop was such a wealth of information for me as
a doula and childbirth educator, especially in communication and
valuable information for teaching others. I have come
away from this time excited and recharged to begin teaching and
working with parents-to-be!
~ Kristin Paulus, Charis Doula, CE and Midwifery student

Corinne Henderson and Celia Sorensen work together to create a
"picture" of prolonged val salva versus physiologic pushing.
Two faces on the dry erase board, one woman with closed eyes, tense
brow, and closed mouth and the other with open eyes, relaxed brow,
and open mouth. Hmmm, adjectives voiced from around the room
describing each woman's face and the difference between the two
styles of pushing.

It was valuable to learn how to build an effective introduction to a
childbirth class series. I feel more prepared with tools to
begin my own childbirth education classes in a way that
engages my audience and pulls
them into learning. I also gleaned several ideas for "hooks"
to help people actively listen and learn as well as games and
activities to make learning fun and interactive. Looking
forward to using these tools!
~ Corinne Henderson, Charis Doula/CE student

I
enjoyed learning to listen and ask the right questions to assist
pregnant couples in making the best decision for their pregnancy and
birth. It was also helpful to learn how to capture and keep
their attention.
~ Celia Sorensen, Charis Doula / CE student

This is my second time participating in the "Teaching Birth"
workshop. I so enjoyed hearing it all again, and it helped
solidify things I gained from it the first time. My favorite
part was how to
ask questions that are both gentle, yet pertinent and thought
provoking. Plus, I've learned new creative ideas to use during
future classes!
~ Kate McKinney, CD, CCE, Midwifery Student
