Our Charis Family

Marilyn Garman

Marilyn and Ava

My name is Marilyn Garman. I grew up in the rural parts of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, nestled between woods and farmland. Growing up I had a love for children and had all my wishes to help care for them granted as my family started doing foster care when I was 6 years old. I enjoyed all the duties that came with it. As a child I always dreamed of being a nurse and serving others helping them to get better.

Later in my local church youth group I met this amazing guy. And he was the love of my life and I married him.

Henry has been my amazing husband for 15 years and we have 5 children. One is safe in heaven. As a mother I have often said there needs to be more support for mothers. Being a mother is the hardest yet most rewarding job. After meeting a friend and catching up on the latest in our lives I asked her what was new in her life. She told me that she was schooling to be a certified doula . Instantly my spirit leapt and I knew someday that is what I wanted to do. Putting that dream on a shelf for a later time I kept being a wife and mother.

At the birth of my third child I had a nurse that was a former homebirth midwife assistant and she was amazing. She cared for me in such a caring, tender way. That was my best and most empowering birth experience. That day another little seed was planted in my heart. I wanted to see more women experience what I had just experienced.

I feel honored to be in the Charis Childbirth birth doula course. And I want to be the hands and feet of Jesus to mothers in labor.

'Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them from the ends of the earth,
Among  them the blind and the lame, The woman with child and The one who labors with child,  together,
A great throng shall return there...And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the LORD.'
 Jeremiah 31:8, 14
