Did you know

People who laugh a lot are much healthier than those who don't.  Dr. Lee Berk at the Loma Linda School of Public Health in California found that laughing lowers levels of stress hormones, and strengthens the immune system - not to mention a good belly-laugh is great exercise!!  Six-year-olds have it best - they laugh an average of 300 times a day.  Adults only laugh 15 to 100 times a day.

Our Director's Heart

Beaverdam Baptist Missionary Home
 in Montpelier, Virginia

Greetings from your Newsletter Editor and Charis Director of Midwifery Studies, Susan Oshel.  Kristin is on vacation in Virginia and because her computer broke while traveling she hasn't been able to send her "Director's Heart".   Thus we're a little late releasing the newsletter this month and send our apologies to you, our beloved readers!

What a wonderful gathering we had at the Charis "Labor Support Workshop" held on Saturday, August 11, 2012!  We were nestled in beautiful rural Montpelier, Virginia at the Beaverdam Baptist Missionary Home.  Old students and new gathered for dinner Friday night at California Pizza Kitchen at Short Pump Town Center outside Richmond, VA before the workshop.  Bright and early Saturday morning we began an awesome day becoming more skilled in the process of helping families during labor and immediately following birth.   I always come home refreshed and inspired after attending Charis workshops, and this one was super awesome and inspiring!!  It was great to meet face-to-face some of our dedicated Charis students!!  Look for a full overview about our adventures in next month's newsletter and on the Charis website.

Join us in welcoming Christy Hicks as our new administrative assistant!  Last month Kristin Schuchmann announced that Sheri Hunt would be unable to continue working as her administrative assistant after July and that we were accepting applications for the position.  After looking through many resumes, Christy Hicks was chosen to be our new administrative assistant.  Her qualifications are perfect and she is amazing!  Kristin met Christy (and fell instantly in love with her!) when she began prenatal care with her at Birthways in 2010 and she had the huge privilege of serving Christy and her husband Ed as their midwife when they delivered their beautiful baby girl Athena a year ago.  We’re super happy to have Christy as the newest member of the Charis family!  Enjoy meeting  Christy in "Our Charis Family" feature this month.

Love and Blessings,
Susan Oshel, CPM, Charis Director of Midwifery Studies

'Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them from the ends of the earth,
Among  them the blind and the lame, The woman with child and The one who labors with child,  together,
A great throng shall return there...And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the LORD.'
